Chinese Automaker to Build Egypt's First Luxury Electric Car by 2027

Egypt's first luxury electric passenger vehicle is set to enter production in June 2027 through a partnership between Chinese automaker Rox Global and Ezz El Arab Elsewedy Investments. Manufacturing will take place in Sixth of October City, where the joint venture, Rox ESI Egypt, plans to produce around 3,000 vehicles initially before increasing output to 5,000 units within three years.

The project will comply with the Industrial Development Authority's requirement that 45% of vehicle components be sourced locally. The development forms part of plans to expand the complex's annual production capacity to 80,000 vehicles through the construction of a second factory. The first Egyptian-made Rox vehicle is scheduled to roll off the production line in June 2027.

Rox ESI Egypt aims to position Egypt as a manufacturing and logistics hub serving markets across the Middle East and Africa. Initial export targets include Nigeria, Angola and Ghana, while a separate facility focused on right-hand-drive models is planned for East and Southern Africa. Rox entered the Egyptian market in 2025 with the Rox 01, a range-extended electric SUV.

Distribution in Egypt will continue to be handled by Nour El Din El Sherif. Established in 2023, Ezz El Arab Elsewedy Investments is a joint venture between Elsewedy Industries and Ezz El Arab Automotive Group.

The company operates manufacturing facilities in Sixth of October City and began producing Proton vehicles in Egypt in 2025.

It also manufactures vehicles for third parties, including Chinese truck maker Jinbei. The first locally built Rox models will feature modifications tailored to the Egyptian market, including enhanced air conditioning systems, chassis adjustments for local roads and Arabic voice control in the Egyptian dialect.
