The Dubai Miracle Garden is a full-blown flower metropolis, home to over 150 million blooms arranged into hearts, castles, planes, and the occasional floating lady with hair made entirely of petals. Open between October and April, when the desert cools down enough for the garden to stay open, it's the kind of place that swallows a whole afternoon before you've noticed.

Next door to Miracle Garden sits its quieter, fluttering cousin. Housed inside a giant dome designed to survive the desert heat, Dubai Butterfly Garden is home to thousands of butterflies gliding through a tropical jungle of flowering plants; the kind of climate-controlled paradise that makes you forget you're a five-minute drive from a highway. Pair it with Miracle Garden next door for the full afternoon: one outdoors and blazing, one indoors and buzzing.

The Gardens at Bahrain Bay pair sleek art installations with landscaped greenery, and at its centre sits the Sensory Garden, where every plant and flower is tagged with its Latin name like it's daring you to learn something between selfies. It's become one of the most photographed spots in the Kingdom, which tracks the second you're wandering the jogging path with an art piece on one side and a wall of blooms on the other.

Riyadh's answer to Dubai's floral flex arrives with zero subtlety; the Boulevard Flowers somehow crams in more than 180 million flowers, alongside three life-sized Boeing 777s recreated entirely out of blooms. It runs as part of Riyadh Season, opening sometime between November and April depending on the year's calendar, so it's worth checking the season's dates before you plan a trip around it.

Somewhere along the wadis of the East Coast sits a working flower farm that never bothered chasing the theatrics. There's no themed sculpture in sight, just rows of blooms grown the way flowers have always been grown: sun, soil and a fair amount of patience. The farm only wakes up from around November to March, so if you're chasing it in July, you'll find nothing but dust and the ghost of last season's marigolds.

Budaiya Botanical Garden splits its space between palm groves, aromatic plants, and pockets of wildflowers, with wide shaded paths that make it an easy escape from the heat, and it's very much a locals' spot rather than a tourist trail fixture. From December to April it doubles up as the site of Bahrain's Saturday farmers' market, so you can wander the blooms and walk away with a bag of fresh produce in the same trip.
