Three Chimpanzees Seized at Cairo Airport During Smuggling Attempt
Three chimpanzees and rare reptiles were confiscated at Cairo Airport, with the case referred for investigation under wildlife protection laws.
Three sedated baby chimpanzees and a number of rare reptiles were seized at Cairo International Airport during an attempted smuggling operation bound for India.
The seizure was carried out by Egyptian authorities, with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation confirming that an Egyptian passenger had been apprehended.
The chimpanzees were found in a fully sedated state, which officials said posed a direct threat to their lives.
Ten sealed bags containing reptiles were also recovered, though they were not opened at the airport for safety reasons.
The General Authority for Veterinary Services coordinated with the airport’s wildlife conservation unit to examine and classify the animals before determining appropriate handling procedures.
The animals were confiscated in line with regulations governing the possession and trade of endangered species.
They were then transferred under veterinary supervision to ensure recovery and moved to Alexandria Zoo, where they will be housed. Legal action has been initiated against those involved, with the case referred to the relevant authorities for investigation.
Officials said the measures form part of ongoing efforts to address illegal wildlife trafficking. Egypt is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, which regulates cross-border trade in endangered animals and plants through a permit system and requires member states to criminalise illegal trafficking.
Authorities said monitoring and enforcement have been intensified at border points, including major transit hubs.
Chimpanzees are classified as endangered, and their capture and transport, particularly under sedation, can result in high mortality rates. Reptiles are also frequently targeted in illegal trade due to demand in exotic pet markets, with many species protected under international agreements.
