Online Licensing Platform Opens for Private Museums in Sharjah
Collectors and cultural institutions can now register and license private museums through a unified digital system.
A new online platform for the registration and licensing of private museums has been introduced in Sharjah, allowing collectors, owners of cultural collections and non-governmental entities to apply for approvals through a unified digital system.
Developed by the Sharjah Museums Authority in collaboration with the Sharjah Economic Development Department, the service was introduced under Law No. 7 of 2020 regulating the authority. It is intended to bring the private museum sector under a more structured institutional framework and ensure compliance with approved operational and museum standards.
Available through the authority's website, the platform enables applicants to submit information about their museums, specify locations and operating hours, review licensing requirements and complete the entire process electronically.
According to the authority, the system is designed to simplify procedures, reduce processing times and improve the user experience.
Licensing applications will be assessed based on several criteria, including compliance with the recognised museum concept, adherence to legal and operational requirements and the clear designation of the institution as a private museum.
Applicants must also demonstrate the authenticity of their collections and provide verified documentation proving ownership of artefacts and exhibits. Additional requirements cover exhibition conditions, signage, safety and security measures, accessibility and visitor flow management.
The authority said approvals can be obtained within a relatively short timeframe and encouraged existing private museums, as well as individuals and organisations interested in establishing new ones, to review the requirements and begin the registration process.
