Lynn Adib: On Making Room for Indie Artists in the MENA Music Scene

Since the release of her debut album in 2018, Syrian vocalist, composer and songwriter Lynn Adib has emerged as one of the region’s most distinctive independent voices, carving out a reputation through her fearless exploration of Arabic music. Drawing from maqams, contemporary classical traditions, jazz and experimental soundscapes, she has built a body of work that constantly challenges the boundaries of genre. She is also recognised for Bedouin Burger, her project with Lebanese music pioneer and composer Zeid Hamdan.

In a candid interview at Oakenfest 2026, one of Lebanon and the region’s most prominent independent music festivals, Adib reflects on the evolving landscape of MENA’s independent music scene. While she acknowledges its steady growth, she argues that it still largely remains within the confines of a niche audience. One of the scene’s biggest challenges, she notes, is a lack of curiosity among broader listeners, with much of the region’s musical consumption still shaped by more familiar, mainstream sounds.

Having navigated the realities of being an independent artist herself, Adib has witnessed music’s ability to cross boundaries and connect with audiences beyond expected circles. Her journey has reinforced her belief that independent Arab music has the potential to reach far wider audiences, if given the right platforms and opportunities.

For Adib, the future of the scene is not about replacing mainstream music, but expanding access to alternative sounds. She believes independent music must move beyond traditional venues and niche communities, finding its way into everyday spaces where new listeners can discover it organically.
