Egypt Will Export Farmed Fish Products to Europe for First Time
The National Food Safety Authority said Egypt met EU standards, including monitoring for veterinary drug residues, and is preparing traceability and lab testing ahead of exports.
Egypt has been added for the first time to the list of countries authorised to export aquaculture products to the European Union, opening access to European markets for farmed fish and related products. The approval covers exports of farmed finfish, crustaceans and associated aquaculture goods.
The decision is expected to be formally adopted in the third quarter of 2026 and will come into effect 20 days after adoption.
According to the National Food Safety Authority, the inclusion follows the completion of technical requirements, including the establishment of a monitoring system for veterinary drug residues aligned with EU standards.
Authorities submitted detailed technical documentation demonstrating compliance with European regulatory and quality control systems, supported by coordination between national bodies and international partners.
Preparations are ongoing to facilitate exports under the new framework, including inspections and accreditation of production facilities, implementation of product traceability systems and strengthening of laboratory testing capabilities.
The authority also indicated that work is underway to enable exports of composite food products, which include multiple ingredients such as dairy or other animal-origin components, pending the adoption of additional regulatory amendments later this year.
