80 Spiny Tailed Lizards Released at Imam Abdulaziz Reserve

Eighty spiny-tailed lizards have been released into a protected reserve in Riyadh as part of environmental monitoring linked to Riyadh Expo 2030.

The programme was carried out by the Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve Development Authority in partnership with Riyadh Expo 2030, with release sites selected based on field studies to ensure suitable habitat conditions. Monitoring teams are using tracking technologies to study how the animals adapt and behave, with the data contributing to broader assessments of ecological balance within the reserve.

The initiative forms part of wider environmental management efforts tied to the Expo development, focusing on integrating conservation measures alongside infrastructure planning.

Recent data from the reserve authority showed that 55 wildlife births were recorded across the Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve and the King Khalid Royal Reserve by mid-second quarter 2026.

Of these, 40 were recorded within the Imam Abdulaziz Reserve, including nine Arabian oryx and 46 sand gazelles.
