Child Helpline Handles 143,000 Calls in Egypt in Early 2026
The helpline recorded thousands of complaints and interventions, including cases of abuse and child marriage.
The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood reported that its child helpline handled more than 143,000 calls during the first quarter of 2026, registering 6,878 complaints, reports and assistance requests.
The figures, covering January to March, reflect an average of 1,555 calls and 75 reports per day, with services reaching around 10,000 children. According to the report, 89% of service seekers required support for children in danger, while 11% sought psychological or legal consultations.
Cases received during the period included family neglect, psychological and physical violence, child labour, female genital mutilation, child marriage and online risks such as cyberbullying, extortion and threats.
Requests also covered support services such as shelter provision for found children and assistance with issuing identity documents.
The helpline intervened in 14 cases to prevent female genital mutilation and stopped 39 underage marriages, with legal measures taken in each case.
Demand for services was highest in Giza, Cairo, Alexandria, Sharqia and Qalyubia, with interventions carried out in coordination with local authorities and child protection units.
The council provides free legal and psychological consultations, alongside family counselling and support sessions through specialised units.
Reports and complaints are received around the clock via the helpline, WhatsApp and the council’s official platforms, with follow-up actions taken in coordination with relevant entities and civil society organisations.
