Hotel Manager for Jailed for a Year for Denying Woman a Solo Room
The appeals court overturned an earlier dismissal in a case involving refusal to accommodate a woman alone.
A misdemeanour appeals court in Port Said has sentenced a hotel manager to one year in prison with labour and fined EGP 50,000 after overturning an earlier ruling in a discrimination case.
The decision came after the Public Prosecution appealed a first-instance judgment issued on March 3rd, 2026, which had dismissed the case filed by journalist Alaa Saad.
The case dates back to January 2026, when Saad accused the manager of refusing to allow her to check into a hotel room on her own. She subsequently filed a complaint, leading to legal proceedings.
The appeals court unanimously set aside the initial dismissal and issued its ruling in absentia, convicting the manager on the discrimination charge linked to the refusal to accommodate her alone.
According to the report, the hotel involved in the case was not identified. The verdict marks a reversal of the earlier court decision and affirms the charges brought forward by the Public Prosecution in the case.
