UAE Residents Will Be Limited to Five Registered Cars Under 2027 Rules

Individual residents in the UAE will be limited to five licensed vehicles each under new federal traffic regulations taking effect on January 1st, 2027.

The measure is set out in Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026, which approves the Executive Regulation of Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on the Regulation of Traffic.

Under Article 89, residents may own up to two vehicles under the standard provision. Registering or renewing additional vehicles will require an extra fee for each vehicle, with a maximum of five vehicles permitted per resident.

Licensing applications must be submitted by vehicle owners or their legally authorised representatives through electronic channels designated by the relevant licensing authority. The same article also prohibits licensing right-hand-drive vehicles for road use, allowing them for display purposes only, and excludes vehicles that do not meet prescribed road safety requirements.
