Green Initiatives Take Root Across the UAE for 2026 Planting Week

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has launched the 47th Planting Week, running until November 8th, 2026 under the theme ‘Together, Let’s Plant the UAE’.

The nationwide programme invites individuals, families, schools, volunteers and institutions to take part in tree planting and care activities, with a focus on expanding green spaces, conserving biodiversity and addressing desertification. The initiative also supports wider environmental targets linked to the UAE’s net zero by 2050 goal.

Programmes differ across the emirates. In Abu Dhabi, plans include planting more than 75 million mangrove trees and restoring over 1.8 million coral colonies. Dubai’s plans target more than 3.5 million new trees and an increase in green space to 187 million square metres, while Sharjah will host workshops on planting local seeds alongside volunteer activities.

Ajman is promoting agriculture through initiatives including the Ajman Agriculture Award and awareness campaigns focused on afforestation and preserving vegetation cover. Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain are concentrating on expanding green spaces and planting more native trees, while 12 environmental initiatives in Fujairah are expected to result in 1,000 trees being planted.

Planting Week also includes activities designed for families and children, with participants able to plant seedlings, follow their growth and learn water-efficient care techniques. Workshops for women will cover plant selection, planting and maintenance, while other activities include agricultural exhibitions, environmental awareness sessions and volunteering opportunities.

The ministry is encouraging the use of native species suited to local conditions, including ghaf, sidr and samar trees, alongside mangroves in coastal areas. It also stressed the importance of matching planting choices to water requirements and maintaining regular care and monitoring after trees are planted.
