Climate-Smart Crops Initiative Launched in the UAE
A new programme will introduce low-water crops to support sustainable food production.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has launched the National Agricultural Initiative for the Adoption of Climate-Smart Crops, aimed at strengthening sustainable food production in the country.
Announced during the UAE Conference and Exhibition in Al Ain, the initiative is being developed in collaboration with the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture to translate agricultural research into practical field applications.
The programme focuses on introducing crops suited to local environmental conditions, prioritising millet varieties and sorghum, which require up to 50% less water than conventional grains while maintaining productivity in high temperatures. These crops are also described as nutrient-rich and naturally gluten-free.
In the livestock sector, Blue Panicum Grass has been identified as a sustainable fodder option, capable of growing in saline soils and irrigated with non-conventional water sources, supporting efforts to reduce pressure on freshwater reserves.
The initiative aims to diversify the national food basket, reduce reliance on imports and increase self-sufficiency in food and feed production. A dedicated Emirati recipe book is also planned to support the integration of these crops into local diets.
