Metro and rail fare increases will take effect Friday March 27 amid rising fuel, electricity, and maintenance costs.
Metro and railway ticket prices are set to increase starting Friday, March 27th 2026. The changes will apply to services operated by Egyptian National Railways as well as Cairo Metro Lines one, two and three.
Railway fares will see varying increases depending on travel distance. Ticket prices for long-distance trains will rise by 12.5%, while short-distance journeys will increase by 25%.
On the Cairo Metro, tickets for journeys of up to nine stations will increase to EGP 10, up from EGP 8, while fares for trips of up to 16 stations will rise to EGP 12 from EGP 10. Ticket prices for longer distances will remain unchanged, with journeys of up to 23 stations continuing at EGP 15, and trips exceeding 23 stations and up to 39 stations remaining at EGP 20.
The fare increases have been attributed to rising operational expenses, including increases in gas prices, maintenance expenses and employee wages.
