The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has opened its doors to the public with remarkable fanfare. During its first week, the museum attracted an average of around 19,000 visitors per day, according to CEO Ahmed Ghoneim. On its busiest day, 17,000 visitors streamed through its halls, while mid-week attendance exceeded 12,000.
To manage the influx, the museum has implemented online-only ticketing on weekends and public holidays, while weekday tickets remain available on-site.
The museum was officially inaugurated on November 1st in a landmark ceremony attended by 79 official delegations, including 39 led by kings, princes, and heads of state and government. Its public opening on November 4th coincided with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, with the boy king’s collection revealed in full to the public for the first time.
