Military Service Evasion Fine Raised to Up to EGP 100,000
Parliament backs tougher penalties for draft evasion and reserve no-shows, with fines rising to EGP 100,000.
Egypt’s House of Representatives has approved amendments to the Military and National Service Law that increase penalties for evading compulsory military service and for failing to respond to reserve call-ups.
The vote took place on February 16th, 2026, with the amendments now awaiting presidential approval. Under the revised provisions, individuals who evade compulsory military service after the age of 30 face imprisonment and/or fines ranging from EGP 20,000 to EGP 100,000.
The previous fine range stood between EGP 3,000 and EGP 10,000. For those summoned to reserve duty who fail to report without a valid excuse, penalties now include jail terms and/or fines of between EGP 10,000 and EGP 20,000, compared with the earlier range of EGP 1,000 to EGP 3,000.
The amendments also expand the grounds for permanent or temporary exemption from mandatory service. Injuries sustained during “terrorist operations” are now explicitly included alongside those incurred during military operations.
