Egyptian Cabinet Approves Stricter Traffic Penalties
New measures set fines of EGP 2,000 to EGP 10,000 for speeding and improper lane use and increase penalties for unlicensed driving plate tampering and unsafe goods transport.
Egypt’s Cabinet has approved amendments to Traffic Law No. 66 of 1973, introducing tougher penalties for a range of traffic violations as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
The revised framework sets new administrative fines and additional taxes for vehicles operating without valid licences or with expired registrations. It also introduces a fine band ranging from EGP 2,000 to EGP 10,000 for offences including speeding and improper lane usage.
Stricter measures will apply to repeat offenders. Under the amendments, fines may be doubled and driving licences temporarily suspended for repeated violations such as littering from vehicles, excessive noise, and the unsafe transport of goods.
The Cabinet said the approach targets persistent behaviours that disrupt traffic order, with penalties escalating based on recurrence. The changes also criminalise driving without a licence and tampering with vehicle licence plates.
Repeat offences in these categories may result in imprisonment. Penalties for commercial transport violations have been raised as well, combining higher fines with the possibility of jail sentences, particularly for breaches related to vehicle condition, documentation and road conduct.
