AI Lab to Predict Traffic Before Congestion Builds in Dubai
Used during GITEX 2025 to identify congestion hotspots, the platform automates more than 150 indicators and flags accident‑prone locations.
The Roads and Transport Authority has launched an AI-powered Transport Data Analysis Laboratory designed to predict traffic congestion and intervene before delays escalate, marking a shift in Dubai’s traffic management approach from response to prevention.
Based at the Enterprise Command and Control Centre, the laboratory consolidates real-time and historical data from more than 35 transport sources into a single analytical platform. These sources span public transport networks including buses, metro, tram and marine services, as well as taxis, soft mobility options and private vehicles, providing a comprehensive, citywide view of movement patterns.
The lab enables large volumes of data to be translated into predictive indicators that support faster and more accurate decision-making. The system allows traffic managers to optimise signal timings, deploy resources more efficiently and coordinate responses across agencies during peak hours, incidents and major public events.
The platform was tested during GITEX 2025, where it analysed traffic conditions before and during the event. Insights from the system helped identify congestion hotspots and improve traffic flow around the exhibition area, with findings feeding into future planning for similar high-demand periods.
Beyond congestion management, the laboratory also supports road safety efforts by identifying locations with recurring accidents, enabling preventive measures in coordination with relevant entities. More than 150 operational performance indicators have been automated through the platform, strengthening monitoring capabilities, response times and the evaluation of traffic policies across Dubai’s transport network.
