This Fayoum Ecolodge Has a Pool in the Middle of the Desert
Zowara Ecolodge has a desert pool, a museum of ancient whales, and huts built on 40 million-year-old seabed.
Tens of millions of years ago, on a very specific plot of land in the heart of the Fayoum Oasis, mammals now long extinct swam through the waters of the Tethys Sea, gliding over what is now silence and sand. On this same stretch of desert, where dunes rise like paused waves and olive groves punctuate the horizon, stands Zowara Ecolodge.
Inside its huts, glass bottle domes keep you warm and insulated, beds of colourful layered quilts spill across low beds, and fine grains of sand gather beneath your feet. Outside, a traditional pigeon house watches over the camp, and beyond it, tent pitches dissolve into the landscape for travellers who prefer the stars without a roof between them. Even the shared bathrooms, tucked discreetly nearby, are unexpectedly generous, with rows of stone basins and hot showers waiting after a day in the dunes.
The desert near Zowara rewards curiosity. Activities like sand-boarding and hiking pull you deeper into the vast, grainy landscape, while stargazing through a telescope reveals a sky that feels startlingly close. Further out, the Magic Lake and Valley of the Whales show you the booming biodiversity and natural history of the oasis. And back at the camp, the Nature and Culture House - a mini-museum built by Zowara owner Hani Zaki - gathers Fayoum's ancient story beneath one roof. Finally, a pool, blue and rectangular, stretches almost improbably into the desert, inviting you to cool off where an ancient sea once stood.
