Study Reveals That 91% of Egyptians Use AI Tools While Shopping
A Visa study found that most Egyptian consumers rely on AI for price comparisons, reviews and product recommendations.
Ninety-one percent of Egyptian consumers use artificial intelligence tools to assist with shopping, according to Visa's 2026 Stay Safe study on digital commerce and fraud.
The survey, conducted by Wakefield Research between January and February 2026, covered 5,800 adults across 17 markets in Central Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Among Egyptian respondents using AI while shopping, 75% said they use it to compare prices, while 65% rely on it for gift ideas and an equal share use it to check product ratings and reviews.
The study found that 97% of users believe AI is making shopping faster and easier, while 71% said it helps them discover new brands and retailers.
However, only 38% said they would trust AI to complete payments on their behalf. Social commerce also continues to gain traction, with 85% of respondents reporting that they have purchased products directly through social media platforms. Consumers also see AI playing a growing role in security.
According to the study, 88% believe AI will become an important tool in protecting users from fraud, while 63% said it has already made scams easier to identify.
Despite this, 36% of respondents reported experiencing a financial scam over the past year. Among those affected, 46% said the fraud originated through social media channels.
When asked who bears responsibility for protecting consumers, 47% pointed to regulators and government authorities, 43% cited banks and financial institutions, and 28% identified payment providers.
Only 13% said consumers should carry sole responsibility. The survey also highlighted concerns around children and online fraud.
Ninety-one percent of respondents said children in their lives struggle to recognise scams, while 61% said they had seen a child become a victim while shopping or gaming online.
In addition, 35% of Egyptian parents said their children have access to mobile payment applications or digital wallets.
