Six-Month Price Cut Initiative Launched for Basic Goods in Egypt

A six-month programme to reduce prices on basic commodities has been launched nationwide, alongside tighter market monitoring and mandatory visible price displays at points of sale.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued the directives, instructing governors to strengthen oversight across retail markets and ensure access to lower-priced essentials in all governorates.

The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade launched the first phase on September 10th, 2026, offering 12 basic commodities at reduced prices across 284 outlets.

The programme is set to expand by 18 additional items during September, bringing the total to 30 commodities. It will continue until March 2027, covering the month of Ramadan.

Madbouly also directed the establishment of permanent markets in every governorate, alongside a seasonal markets programme to be implemented with the General Federation of Chambers of Commerce.

As part of the accompanying market controls, governors were instructed to enforce clear price displays and intensify local inspections to monitor compliance.

Operations centres will also be tasked with prioritising citizen complaints related to prices and market practices.

The measures were discussed during a Governors’ Council meeting in the New Capital, with governors participating in person and by video conference to coordinate implementation across the country.
