Nearly EGP 37 Billion Allocated to Electricity Grid Expansion

Nearly EGP 37 billion has been allocated to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for fiscal year 2026/27 to upgrade and expand the national transmission network.

The investment plan, approved by the company’s General Assembly, is intended to increase grid capacity as additional power generation comes online, including new renewable-energy projects.

According to EETC Chairwoman Mona Rizk, 46% of the investment programme will go towards completing existing projects, while 54.04% will fund new projects, replacement programmes and regional control centres.

Work includes increasing transformer-substation capacity and expanding extra-high- and high-voltage transmission lines and cables in coordination with the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and electricity distribution companies.

The programme also covers the transition towards a smart grid, with upgrades across different voltage levels aimed at improving network efficiency, stability and the ability to accommodate additional generation.

Measures to reduce technical losses include maintaining voltage levels, improving power factors, installing reactive-power compensation units, optimising load distribution, using thermal imaging to identify equipment issues and replacing ageing voltage systems.

Three regional control centres are currently being implemented or upgraded in the Delta, Cairo and Alexandria regions, alongside efforts to strengthen the National Energy Control Centre.

The transmission expansion also supports planned electricity interconnection projects with neighbouring countries and wider efforts to increase cross-border power exchange.
