South Sinai Receives 826 Solar Streetlights Under China Grant

The Ministry of Local Development and Environment has delivered 826 solar-powered street lighting poles and 44 air conditioning units to South Sinai Governorate under a grant from China.

The handover marks the second phase of a renewable energy push in the governorate, following the earlier delivery of nearly 1,000 solar lighting poles through the ministry’s Green Sharm project.

Each of the new poles has a 40-watt solar capacity and stands seven metres tall, arriving fully equipped and ready for installation. The shipment also includes 44 air conditioning units with a capacity of three horsepower each. The lighting poles will be distributed according to the needs of targeted areas across South Sinai.

Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said the equipment will help expand clean energy use and improve energy efficiency, while reducing emissions and providing lighting in vital areas, Bedouin communities and remote locations.

The delivery builds on the six-year Green Sharm project, implemented by the ministry with the United Nations Development Programme and South Sinai Governorate. The programme has completed 50 public and private-sector projects, installed more than four megawatts of solar capacity at locations including Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 85,000 tonnes.
