Egyptian-Chinese Partnership to Build EGP 2 Billion Battery Plant

BME for Battery Manufacturing and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology have signed an agreement to establish an electric battery manufacturing plant in Egypt, with initial investment exceeding EGP 2 billion for the first phase.

The Ministry of Industry said the plant will begin with annual production capacity of 1 gigawatt-hour, rising to 5 gigawatt-hours in a second phase that will expand into batteries for passenger vehicles and battery energy storage systems used with solar and wind projects.

The project is targeting a local content rate of 40%. No location or construction timeline has yet been disclosed.

BME is a newly established joint venture founded by Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles Company, Auto D for Industry, Trade and Supplies, and Contemporary Amperex Technology, better known as CATL. The Chinese company develops battery and zero-carbon energy technologies for electric vehicles and energy-storage systems.

The plant will initially focus on batteries for heavy commercial vehicles before expanding into passenger-car batteries and stationary energy-storage applications.

Industry Minister Khaled Hashem said the project reflects Egypt’s ability to “meet global manufacturing standards and produce high-quality, competitive products.”

The agreement comes as industrial cooperation between Egypt and China expands across manufacturing, technology and supply chains, including projects linked to the China–Egypt Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone.

It also aligns with the National Automotive Industry Development Programme, launched in October 2025 to increase local vehicle manufacturing and component production. The programme targets 60% local value added, more than 35% domestic components and annual production of 100,000 vehicles.
