Egypt Targets 45% Renewable Energy Share by 2028

Plans to increase the share of renewable energy in Egypt’s electricity mix to 45% by 2028 were reviewed during a meeting between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat.

According to an official statement, discussions covered renewable energy projects scheduled over the next two years alongside longer-term electricity and energy strategies extending through 2040.

Mahmoud Esmat outlined plans focused on expanding reliance on renewable energy sources, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and reinforcing the national electricity grid.

Among the projects reviewed was the second phase of the 500-megawatt Obelisk Solar Power Project in Nag Hammadi, which is scheduled to connect to the national grid during May.

Officials also reviewed a 900-megawatt wind power project in Ras Shukeir targeted for grid connection in 2027, alongside a 1,700-megawatt solar power project planned in Minya Governorate.

The meeting additionally addressed plans for connected and standalone energy storage stations in Minya, Alexandria, and Qena Governorate with a combined capacity of 4,000 megawatts.

Discussions also covered the Gabal El Zayt Wind Farm, which has a total capacity of approximately 580 megawatts and is considered among the largest wind farms in Egypt and Africa.

According to the statement, the projects form part of wider efforts to strengthen grid production capacity, lower carbon emissions, and expand renewable electricity generation.
