30 Dubai Pedestrian Bridges to Get Motion-Sensor Lighting

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a project to install smart, motion-sensor LED lighting on 30 pedestrian bridges across the emirate as part of efforts to improve pedestrian safety and reduce energy consumption.

The project forms part of the RTA's People Happiness initiative, which aims to create a safer and more comfortable experience for road users while supporting Dubai's wider goals for smart, sustainable infrastructure. The authority said the upgrades will also help optimise infrastructure assets and lower operating costs.

Each bridge will be fitted with energy-efficient LED lighting that activates automatically when pedestrian movement is detected. According to the RTA, the system is designed to maintain safety during evening hours while using less energy than conventional lighting.

Before work began, engineers carried out site surveys and technical assessments at all 30 locations. Light meters were used to measure existing illumination levels and determine the appropriate lighting required for each bridge in line with approved standards.

The first phase of the project covers 21 pedestrian bridges, with the remaining nine to be upgraded before the project is completed in the fourth quarter of 2026. The RTA said it will continue modernising road lighting and related infrastructure by adopting technologies suited to local environmental conditions and supporting the emirate's environmental sustainability targets.
