‘I Am a Lifelong Learner’ Initiative Rolls Out Nationwide With UNESCO
Implemented across all governorates, the initiative supports 10 Egyptian cities in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.
The Ministry of Local Development has launched the ‘I Am a Lifelong Learner’ initiative across all governorates, in cooperation with United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The programme aims to promote a culture of continuous learning, affirm the right of individuals to learn at all stages of life, and translate lifelong learning from policy frameworks into everyday practice. According to the ministry, the initiative supports Egyptian cities that are members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.
10 cities are currently part of the network: Giza, Aswan, Damietta, Fayoum, Sharqia, Zefta, Alexandria, Cairo, Mansoura and Shebin El Kom. Officials said the initiative aligns with national priorities and international approaches that extend learning beyond formal education.
It focuses on community-based, vocational and digital learning pathways that enable individuals to continue developing skills throughout their lives.
The ministry added that the launch responds to rapid global changes that are reshaping labour markets and daily life, highlighting the need to strengthen future-oriented skills. These include digital competencies, entrepreneurship, vocational training and language skills, which are seen as key to expanding employment opportunities and supporting social and economic participation.
Stated objectives of the initiative include supporting national lifelong learning policies, encouraging government bodies and institutions to adopt inclusive learning programmes, and broadening access to non-formal education routes outside traditional school and university systems.
