Egyptian Artefacts Showcase Culture in US Exhibit

A new exhibit, titled Africa & Byzantium, is spreading Egyptian culture around the US. This exhibit had a successful run at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, and has now headed to its second showing in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio. More than 160 pieces make up this exhibit, with several hailing from Egypt. These Egyptian artefacts were sourced from the Egyptian Museum as well as the Monastery of Saint Catherine, and include diverse icons, metalwork chandeliers, bracelets, and manuscripts.

The purpose of this exhibit is to shine a light on the artistic achievements of medieval Africa, demonstrating how the contributions of North and East Africa shaped the pre-modern world. The exhibit will also explore these regions’ central role in international trade routes and cultural development. Ayman Ashmawy, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, commented on the exhibit, highlighting Egypt’s role in fostering cultural exchange and encouraging Americans to visit the event. This exhibit will run at the Cleveland Museum of Art through July 21st.
