There Are Now More Mobile Lines Than People in Egypt
CAPMAS recorded a surge in telecom and internet subscriptions in 2024, with mobile penetration rates rising to 103.61%.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported a significant rise in telecom and internet subscriptions across all sectors in 2024, with fixed-line phone subscriptions reaching 13.25 million, up from 12.48 million in 2023—an increase of around 770,000 users. The fixed-line penetration rate also grew from 11.6% to 11.97%, with the number of exchanges increasing from 1,651 to 1,676 nationwide. Mobile services recorded the sharpest surge, with active mobile lines climbing to 113.19 million in 2024 compared to 106.32 million a year earlier. The mobile penetration rate rose from 98.89% to 103.61%, meaning the number of active mobile lines now exceeds Egypt’s total population—an indicator of the growing reliance on mobile connectivity. Internet usage also expanded across both fixed and mobile networks. Fixed broadband subscriptions increased from 10.88 million to 11.63 million, while non-phone mobile internet connections rose from 2.47 million to 3.19 million. Active mobile internet users reached 84.24 million, up from 76.68 million in 2023.
