KOTN’s ‘I’ve Got a Guy’ Stars ‘Adults’ Actor Malik Elassal
KOTN recruits ‘Adults’ star Malik Elassal for ‘I’ve Got a Guy,’ its latest sweater campaign about the art of knowing someone.
There is a particular sort of man who, when confronted with a problem, announces that he knows somebody. A plumber, a mechanic, a cousin with an improbable range of professional competencies. Whether this person exists, or can be persuaded to answer the telephone, is generally considered a secondary concern. What matters is the reassuring declaration: “I’ve got a guy.”
For its latest sweater campaign, Egyptian-Canadian clothing label KOTN has enlisted Malik Elassal, the Lebanese-Canadian comedian whose career has acquired considerable momentum following the second season of FX’s Adults. Elassal plays Samir, an anxious, excessively well-meaning twenty-something who presides over his parents’ Queens home and its collection of emotionally disorganised inhabitants. His attempts to manage their affairs tend to produce the very complications he hopes to prevent. One suspects he knows a guy.
The campaign follows last year’s “Tough Guys, Soft Sweaters,” which recruited Danny Trejo, an actor whose formidable screen reputation made the proposition of exceptionally comfortable knitwear rather funny.
With “I’ve Got a Guy,” KOTN returns to the comic possibilities of masculinity, this time finding its subject in the peculiar authority conferred by knowing the right person. Elassal, whose comedy thrives on the distance between confidence and competence, is an especially fitting choice. The sweaters, meanwhile, remain the one thing for which no elaborate personal connection appears necessary.
