Egypt’s Sondos Sonbol Wins Wushu Gold at Youth Olympics

Egyptian wushu athlete Sondos Sonbol claimed gold in the women’s Gunshu event at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, topping the competition with a score of 9.330 points to add another gold medal to Egypt’s tally.

Gunshu is a traditional Chinese martial arts discipline involving the use of a staff. It falls under Taolu, a wushu category in which athletes perform choreographed routines featuring martial arts techniques, judged on execution, difficulty and technical quality. The routines can involve barehanded movements or traditional weapons such as staffs and swords.

Dakar 2026 is taking place from October 31st to November 13th across three locations in Senegal: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. It marks the first time an Olympic event is being hosted on African soil.
