Third Ring Road Extension Officially Opens in Makkah

Traffic has opened in both directions on an extension of Makkah’s Third Ring Road, cutting travel distances to the Grand Mosque and the Jamarat facility in Mina.

According to the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, journeys starting from the Prince Mutib intersection now cover 6.5 kilometres to the Grand Mosque, down from 16.5 kilometres. The distance to Jamarat has fallen from 12 kilometres to four kilometres.

The authority said the changes could reduce journey times by up to approximately 90%, particularly during peak periods and major pilgrimage seasons. The extended roadway is designed to accommodate up to 170,000 vehicles per day across both directions.

The project forms part of wider work to complete the Third Ring Road and improve access across Makkah, with a focus on easing pressure on surrounding roads and increasing network capacity during Hajj and Umrah.
