South Sinai Authorities Continue Rescue and Recovery Efforts Following
Rescue efforts continue in Nuweiba and Taba after flash floods left one dead and one missing, as affected roads reopened.
South Sinai authorities are continuing search and rescue operations and clearing debris from flood-affected areas around Nuweiba and Taba, the South Sinai Governorate confirmed on Wednesday.
According to the governorate, at least one person has died, another was injured and a third remains missing after floodwaters swept away a concrete mixer truck carrying three people in Wadi Watir.
The flooding followed unstable weather beginning October 26, with moderate to heavy rainfall sending powerful torrents through mountain valleys along the Gulf of Aqaba.
In response, Governor Ismail Kamal ordered the closure of affected roads and coordinated emergency operations with local authorities, traffic police and rescue teams. He also inspected the affected areas alongside irrigation officials and tribal representatives to oversee recovery efforts, a statement from his office said.
All affected roads had reopened, although crews continued removing accumulated mud, rocks and debris, the statement added.
Officials also confirmed that flood protection infrastructure in Nuweiba and Taba captured approximately 10.6 million cubic metres of water, helping protect surrounding roads and communities.
South Sinai experienced similar but less severe flooding on October 11 and 12, which temporarily disrupted traffic without causing any casualties.
