Saudi Arabia Elected to UN Science and Technology Commission
The United Nations Economic and Social Council voted for a 2027 to 2030 term.
Saudi Arabia has been elected to the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development for the 2027 to 2030 term, following a vote by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
The commission is responsible for advising on science, technology, and innovation policy within the United Nations system, with a focus on development priorities and global cooperation.
According to the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, the election reflects Saudi Arabia’s participation in discussions on emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, data governance, and digital development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Membership in the commission enables countries to contribute to expert-level policy discussions and provide input on international frameworks shaping science and technology development.
The commission also oversees monitoring the outcomes of global initiatives such as the World Summit on the Information Society and the Global Digital Compact. As part of its role, Saudi Arabia will participate in developing policy recommendations to be submitted to the United Nations General Assembly, covering areas such as innovation ecosystems and access to technology.
Officials said the appointment was coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Saudi Arabia represented in the commission by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission.
Saudi Arabia previously chaired the 25th session of the commission in 2022, reflecting its ongoing involvement in multilateral discussions on digital transformation and technology policy.
