Riyadh Metro has been named among the world’s top four transport projects at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Spain, following a selection process covering 533 entries from 68 countries.
Overseen by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, the metro forms part of a broader public transport network intended to improve mobility and traffic flow while supporting population growth and urban expansion. The project is also designed to contribute to lower transport-related carbon emissions.
During the congress, the commission is also showcasing its use of data and digital technologies in city planning and management, including the Riyadh Data Hub, digital twin applications and artificial intelligence. Other projects being highlighted include traffic management systems, the Green Riyadh programme and wider development initiatives across the capital.
The 2026 Smart City Expo World Congress is being held under the theme ‘Urban Solutions, Real Impact’, bringing together more than 600 speakers to discuss urban mobility, digital transformation, energy, the environment, housing and infrastructure.
