Flame Tree Planting Programme Expands Green Spaces in Dubai

A planting programme is set to expand the presence of the flame tree across Dubai, with new trees to be introduced along streets, in parks, and across recreational areas, alongside a distribution scheme that will allow residents to grow the species at home.
The initiative will see Dubai Municipality lead the planting of Delonix regia across public spaces, while also supporting home cultivation through the distribution of seedlings to residents interested in planting the tree in their houses or farms. The programme is designed to increase the visibility and coverage of the species across the city’s urban and residential environments.
Known for its bright red and orange blooms, the flame tree typically flowers in Dubai from May until the end of July. The species is suited to hot and humid climates and is widely cultivated in similar environments around the world. Its ability to grow quickly in its early years allows it to form a broad canopy, offering shade during peak summer months.
At maturity, the tree can reach heights of up to 12 metres and develop a canopy spanning up to 15 metres. This coverage contributes to reducing ground temperatures beneath the tree by approximately 5 degrees, making it a functional addition to urban cooling efforts in outdoor public spaces.
The species can be planted in well-drained sandy or clay soil and has a lifespan of up to 60 years. While it establishes relatively quickly, it typically takes around a decade to reach full maturity, positioning it as a long-term component of Dubai’s urban landscape.
