Age Rating System for Children's Media Content Rolls Out in UAE
UAE unveils national age ratings and media standards to make children's content safer across digital and traditional platforms.
The UAE is introducing a nationwide age classification system and unified media standards for children's content as part of a broader effort to create a safer and more enriching digital environment for young audiences. Announced by the National Media Authority, the new framework will cover everything from social media and digital platforms to books, films, music, and other artistic works, giving parents clearer guidance on what is appropriate for different age groups.
The initiative consists of two key measures: a national children's media content standards guide, which will serve as a binding reference for media organisations, digital platforms, and content creators, and a comprehensive age classification policy spanning both traditional and digital media. Officials said the standards are designed to prioritise not only children's safety but also content that supports learning, creativity, and positive values as the digital landscape continues to evolve.
The new frameworks complement the UAE's recently announced regulations restricting personal social media accounts for children under 15, forming part of a wider national strategy to strengthen online child protection. The standards are being developed in collaboration with the Child Digital Safety Council, with children themselves expected to contribute to shaping the guidelines, ensuring the system reflects their developmental needs while placing greater responsibility on platforms and media providers.
