New Traditional Neighbourhood Space Hewi Nad Al Sheba Opens in Dubai

Hewi Nad Al Sheba has opened in Dubai as the first traditional neighbourhood space developed under the Hewi Dubai initiative, marking the launch of a new programme aimed at creating large, inclusive community gathering areas across the emirate. The project is designed to encourage social interaction, outdoor activity and intergenerational connection, while supporting local families and small businesses. The open-plan site is intended for everyday use by residents of all ages, including children, adults and senior citizens.
The neighbourhood incorporates landscaping with native plant species such as sidr and tamarisk trees, alongside locally sourced and sustainable materials including limestone, rammed earth and sand. Concrete use has been minimised, and artificial turf has been avoided to maintain a natural environment. A walking path runs through the site to promote daily movement and time spent outdoors.
Several dedicated areas serve different community functions. Al Decha provides a calm gathering space adjacent to the mosque, while Al Saaha functions as a flexible indoor–outdoor area for meetings, celebrations and community events. Al Yalsa overlooks the children’s play area and offers seating for parents and caregivers.
The Hewi Dubai initiative was launched to preserve the legacy of the traditional Emirati fareej and adapt its social values to contemporary urban life. The programme was developed through collaboration between Dubai Municipality, Dubai Future Foundation and Ferjan Dubai.
The opening of Hewi Nad Al Sheba is accompanied by a curated programme of community activities. These include an art exhibition featuring photographs and illustrations of prominent Emirati figures and historical milestones, developed in collaboration with the Erth Dubai initiative. Traditional Emirati games will be hosted in Al Decha, enabling senior citizens to engage with younger generations.
