USD 80 Million International Yacht Marina to Be Built in New Alamein

Plans are under way for the development of an international yacht marina in New Alamein with an estimated investment of USD 80 million. The project forms part of wider efforts within the country to expand high-value yacht and cruise tourism and increase foreign-currency inflows.

The marina is expected to cover around 180,000 square metres and will be developed in phases. A private company will finance the superstructure, manage operations and run the facility once complete, while the government will focus on delivering core infrastructure.

New Alamein recorded visitors from 104 nationalities last summer. The timing of the marina project coincides with rising tourism revenues, which grew by about 20% during the first nine months of the year to reach USD 13.6 billion. Projections indicate potential revenues of USD 17.5 billion by the end of 2025, with more than 18 million tourist arrivals expected. Last year, 15.78 million tourists visited the country, generating USD 15.3 billion in revenue.

The number of tourist yachts entering local ports nearly doubled last year to 393. The increase followed simplified entry and exit procedures and the launch of an electronic yacht-tourism platform in late 2022. A total of 3,371 yacht passengers arrived during the year, representing a mix of nationalities including Egypt, Spain, the UK, France, India, the United States, South Africa and the Philippines.

There are currently 23 yacht marinas across the Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts, including Porto Marina; Hurghada Marina, which spans 60,000 square metres and accommodates 188 yachts; Taba Heights Marina with capacity for 50 yachts; and Marassi Marina on the North Coast, which can receive up to 260 yachts.
