Riyadh Project Recycles Construction Waste Into Roads

The General Authority for Roads and the National Housing Company are recycling construction and demolition waste into road‑paving material at the Al‑Fursan residential development in northeastern Riyadh. Nearly 350,000 cubic metres of construction debris have been collected on site and repurposed as base layers for district roadworks, with the initiative aimed at improving resource efficiency and contributing to sustainable infrastructure and a circular economy. The authority described the approach as converting an environmental challenge into a value‑added resource by reusing materials from within the project area for new pavement works.

The project stems from a memorandum of understanding signed between the General Authority for Roads and the National Housing Company during the Cityscape Global Exhibition to enhance cooperation and share expertise in the road sector. The agreement encourages reusing construction debris and old asphalt in new pavement layers and supports the adoption of sustainable materials. Both entities are sharing innovative ideas and technical solutions intended to improve the quality and longevity of the Kingdom’s road network, while strengthening collaboration with local and international partners, enhancing safety standards and raising overall performance in the road sector.

According to the authority, these initiatives support the roads‑sector programme focused on safety, quality and traffic density, with targets of positioning Saudi Arabia sixth globally in the Road Quality Index and reducing traffic fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people by 2030. The Al‑Fursan initiative was presented as aligning with sustainable construction practices, reduced environmental impact and efficient resource use under Saudi Vision 2030.
