Jubail Island Showcases Rainwater Retention System in Abu Dhabi

Jubail Island, Abu Dhabi’s nature-focused development, has introduced an integrated water management system designed to capture and manage seasonal rainfall.

Recently showcased during seasonal rainfall in the UAE, the system uses a network of strategically positioned retention ponds across the island to capture and manage rainwater during periods of heavy rainfall. By temporarily holding runoff on site, the system helps reduce surface flooding while easing pressure on traditional drainage infrastructure.

Embedded within parks and public spaces, the ponds are designed to blend into the island’s surroundings. Over time, the stored water is gradually absorbed into the ground, supporting groundwater recharge and contributing to the nourishment of native vegetation.

According to LEAD Development, the company behind the project, the benefits extend beyond flood mitigation. The system reduces reliance on treated irrigation water, supports the island’s mangrove ecosystem, and introduces water features that enhance the visual and experiential qualities of the community.
