Obour Landfill Will Be Turned Into a Public Park

Closure procedures have begun at the Obour landfill east of Cairo, with plans to rehabilitate the site and convert part of it into a green park.

According to the Ministry of Local Development and Environment, waste intake at the landfill stopped on April 1st, with safe closure measures now underway to reduce emissions, odours and uncontrolled burning.

The redevelopment plan will reduce the landfill’s footprint from around 300 feddans to 130 feddans, while repurposing the remaining 170 feddans into green spaces and potential investment areas.

Officials said the project includes systems to manage landfill gas and leachate, alongside engineered closure works carried out in cooperation with a specialised company.

Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, said the project responds to long-standing resident complaints over pollution, with a focus on limiting environmental and health impacts.

The ministry added that the initiative builds on similar projects, including the rehabilitation of the Salam landfill, and is intended to serve as a model for sustainable site redevelopment.
