Khalifa University Expands STEM PhD Portfolio to 20 Programmes
Khalifa University broadens doctoral and master’s offerings to strengthen national research capacity.
Khalifa University of Science and Technology has expanded its science, technology, engineering and mathematics postgraduate portfolio, bringing the total number of PhD programmes to 20 across engineering, science, computing and healthcare. The university said the move positions it among the largest STEM doctoral providers in the UAE.
The expansion forms part of efforts to strengthen national research capacity and develop future scientific talent. According to the university, its doctoral programmes are aligned with national strategies, including the National Innovation Strategy and the UAE Energy Strategy, to prepare graduates for roles in industry, academia and government.
Khalifa University also runs dual PhD and master’s programmes with international institutions including KU Leuven, Skoltech, Western University and Tsinghua University, and is in discussions to broaden its global collaborations. Students can access the EnterpriseTECH programme at the University of Cambridge, alongside partnership initiatives with Arizona State University and other institutions aimed at translating research into commercial ventures and technology startups.
The university introduced a BSc-to-PhD pathway in Fall 2023, allowing high-performing undergraduates to progress directly into doctoral study. Around 30% of newly admitted PhD candidates now enter through this route, according to the university. Admission remains competitive, with applications accepted only for the fall semester.
