Illegal Oyster Harvesting in Abu Dhabi Punished by AED 100,000 & Jail
Alongside enforcement, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has launched a project to survey, assess, and rehabilitate traditional oyster habitats.

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi stated it is intensifying measures to prevent the illegal fishing, harvesting, and trade of oysters. Collecting oysters without a permit in Abu Dhabi is now punishable by imprisonment of no less than six months, and/or fines ranging from AED 50,000 to AED 100,000, with the confiscation of equipment used.
The agency underscored that collecting oysters without a permit clearly violates federal law, and that penalties may include imprisonment, fines within the specified range, and the seizure of tools or equipment used in the violation.
Alongside enforcement, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has launched a project to survey, assess, and rehabilitate traditional oyster habitats, aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Climate Change Strategy. Described as the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf, the initiative aims to enhance marine environments and improve seawater quality by documenting traditional diving sites, building an interactive digital map, and engaging school students through the Sustainable Schools Initiative to produce reef balls and raise awareness of marine habitat protection.
