Downtown Cairo's Historic Groppi Café Undergoes Renovations
Once the crown jewel of Downtown Cairo’s café scene, Groppi is being restored to its original form as the Egyptian government begins structural work on the historic building.

Construction crews have begun work on renovating the historic Groppi Café in Talaat Harb Square, one of Downtown Cairo’s most recognisable landmarks. The project is part of ongoing efforts to revive the city’s historic Khedival centre.
Groppi’s multi-floor structure, dating back to the early 20th century, is being assessed and reinforced following a safety review by the National Center for Housing and Building Research. The building’s façade and interiors are expected to be restored in line with its original features.
Founded by Swiss chocolatier Giacomo Groppi in the late 1800s, Groppi became a meeting point for artists, statesmen, and socialites. At its peak, it included restaurants and dessert shops across central Cairo, with one branch on Talaat Harb and another on Adly Street.
Groppi remains deeply tied to Cairo’s cinematic and cultural memory, having served as a backdrop in numerous films and public celebrations.
