Al-Fath Mosque Restoration Underway in Al-Jumum

Restoration work is under way at Al-Fath Mosque in Al-Jumum, Makkah, as part of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historic Mosques, which is rehabilitating 130 mosques across Saudi Arabia. The current phase covers 60 mosques nationwide.

Al-Fath Mosque, located approximately 260 metres from the road linking Makkah and Madinah, is believed to have been prayed in by the Prophet. The restoration will expand the mosque’s area from 455.77 square metres to 553.50 square metres, increasing capacity from 218 to 333 worshippers.

During the first and second phases of work, restoration teams used natural materials including brick, basalt stone, gypsum and wood to preserve the traditional architectural character of the Hijaz region. Traditional design elements such as carved wooden balcony screens are being maintained as part of the conservation effort.

The mosque has experienced extended periods of neglect, with the last major restoration completed in 1998, when a women’s prayer area and additional facilities were introduced. Al-Fath Mosque is included in the project’s second phase, which spans all 13 regions of the Kingdom, including Riyadh, Madinah, Aseer, Jouf and Jazan.
