Rules to Protect Native Species & Habitats Introduced in Abu Dhabi

A new biodiversity protection framework has been introduced across Abu Dhabi, covering native and migratory species as well as terrestrial and marine habitats throughout the emirate.

The framework is established under Resolution No. (2) of 2026, issued by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi.

The resolution applies to areas identified as important for biodiversity conservation, including those outside formally protected zones. It covers species included on lists approved by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, while invasive and non-native species are excluded.

The framework sets out requirements and procedures for conserving species and habitats, restoring degraded ecosystems and rehabilitating affected species. It also regulates certain activities linked to biodiversity and establishes environmental requirements intended to reduce negative impacts.

The measure forms part of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi’s wider environmental legislation and supports ongoing work around nature protection, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation.
