Graeco-Roman Museum Opens First Temporary Exhibition Since 2023
The Alexandria exhibition brings 21 artefacts out of storage for public display for the first time.
The Graeco-Roman Museum in Alexandria has opened its first temporary archaeological exhibition since reopening in 2023, bringing 21 artefacts from its storerooms into public view for the first time.
Titled ‘Alexandria… Identity and Culture Through Time’, the exhibition runs through the end of September 2026 and coincides with Alexandria Governorate’s National Day celebrations and International Translation Day.
The exhibition explores the city’s cultural history through Greek and Roman inscriptions, written texts and everyday objects. Items on display include coins, lamps and pottery vessels, alongside underwater archaeological artefacts recovered from Abu Qir Bay.
The selection also features papyri, ostraca and mummy labels bearing Greek texts, offering insight into daily life, trade and funerary practices in Alexandria during the Greek and Roman periods.
According to the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the exhibition is the first in a planned series of temporary displays intended to present the museum’s collections from different perspectives and bring more storeroom artefacts before the public.
The exhibition also places particular emphasis on the role of ancient texts and translation in reconstructing Alexandria’s history and understanding the city’s cultural legacy.
