Local Wheat Deliveries Rise 17% to 5 Million Tonnes

Egypt received 5 million tonnes of locally grown wheat last season, marking a 17% increase from the previous year, according to Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk.

Farouk said the government set the procurement price for domestic wheat above the cost of imported wheat in an effort to support local production and encourage farmers to deliver larger quantities to the state.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has announced a new incentive price for wheat procured during the current season, as the government continues to seek higher domestic supply.

Farouk also said the ministry had drawn on strategic reserves to meet bakery needs when some producers faced difficulties, using existing stocks to maintain the availability of essential goods in the market.
