Egypt Ranked Africa's Largest Sugar Producer
A new OECD and FAO report ranks Egypt as Africa's largest sugar producer following a rise in output.
Egypt has been ranked Africa's largest sugar producer in the latest Agricultural Outlook report published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
According to the report, the country's growing share of Africa's total sugar production has been driven by continued government support, increased foreign direct investment, incentive-based pricing for farmers, wider adoption of improved seed varieties and expanded processing capacity at sugar factories.
The report also highlighted the Canal Sugar Factory, described as the world's largest beet sugar plant, as one of the key investments contributing to higher domestic sugar production.
Together, these factors have increased Egypt's sugar beet production by approximately 4.8 million tonnes, according to the OECD and FAO.
