Wastewater Treatment Network Grows to 621 Plants Across Egypt

Egypt's wastewater treatment network has grown to around 621 plants with a combined treatment capacity of approximately 19 million cubic metres per day as of June 2026, according to the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities.

The network has expanded from 385 treatment plants before 2014, with the addition of 236 new facilities, including 47 tertiary wastewater treatment plants.

According to the ministry, the expansion forms part of a broader strategy to increase water reuse, improve sanitation services and strengthen water security through continued investment in wastewater infrastructure.

Among the network's largest facilities is the Abu Rawash Wastewater Treatment Plant in Giza, the country's second-largest treatment plant after El Gabal El Asfar. The facility serves around nine million residents and plays a key role in treating wastewater generated across the governorate.

The ministry also highlighted the Zagazig Wastewater Treatment Plant, which has a design capacity of 160,000 cubic metres per day and supports efforts to expand treatment capacity and increase the reuse of treated water.
